DeLauro Applauds Temporary Reprieve for Head Start Centers
Calls for End to Republican Government Shutdown
WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today applauding the news that the National Head Start Association has received up to $10 million from philanthropists Laura and John Arnold. The funding will enable Head Start and Early Head Start programs that had been forced to close or were facing imminent closure due to the Republican Government Shutdown to stay open.
“This announcement is great news for the children who will continue receiving critical education, nutrition and developmental services at their local Head Start center. But relying on generous donors is no way to keep our country on the right path. Republicans in the House of Representatives need to end this intransigence and do what is best for the American public. We should reopen the government immediately and stop lurching from crisis to crisis.”
Today’s announcement means 7,000 children who would have been impacted by Head Start closures in six states will be able to stay in their classrooms. Already 57,000 children have lost access to Head Start because of the indiscriminate sequestration cuts.
