Washington, DC – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn. -3) announced over $650,000 for Yale University through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for biomedical research. The National Institute of Health directs funding to projects that focus on basic research to improve the quality of life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability.

“It is through research, like the projects at Yale to map brain functions and better treat nicotine addiction, that we create the opportunity for the scientific progress and critical breakthrough that will improve people’s health and well being,” said DeLauro. “By funding these efforts we will stimulate the economy, as well as ensure America’s continued leadership in medical research and development.”

Specifically, Yale is receiving recovery funding for the following projects:

Cerebral Metabolic Flux Mapping Using Oxygen 17 NMR, $ 471,832

For the development of oxygen 17-NMR-based mapping, which could be an important tool in mapping of brain functions – crucial for diagnosing disorders and monitoring therapeutic efficacy.

Dopaminergic and Endocannabinoid Interactions in Nicotine Dependence, $194,700

For studies on how to more successfully treat tobacco smoking, specifically examining the effects of nicotine and the treatment drug rimonabant on brain chemistry.
