WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today announced that Tweed New Haven airport received two federal grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation totaling $1,236,582. The funding was administered through the Federal Aviation Administration and will be used for terminal building improvements, including the construction of a year-round passenger walkway shelter and arriving passenger waiting area, and for the purchase of snow removal equipment.

“Tweed New Haven is an important part of the vitality of Southern Connecticut’s economy,” said DeLauro. “This grant will allow the airport to make improvements that will increase use of the facility and will complement the state and local funding New Haven and Connecticut have already committed to improvements at Tweed.”

The State of Connecticut and the City of New Haven have each invested $3 million in various improvement projects at Tweed over the last four years with an additional $2 million raised in capital funding by the city.

Southern Connecticut, with a population of some 1.5 million people, is currently serviced by only two national airline carriers. Conservative estimates have indicated that improved service at Tweed New Haven Airport would infuse over $200 million into our regional economy over a five year period.
