WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) released the following statement upon learning that tests conducted for the suspected case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or “mad-cow” disease were confirmed negative by USDA. DeLauro co-chairs the Congressional Food Safety Caucus and recently introduced legislation that moves the principle agencies of the U.S. government that contribute to food safety into one department - the Food Safety Administration.

“Like many who were concerned by the threat of a second case of ‘mad cow’, I am relieved to learn that further tests by USDA proved negative. This possibility, however, is a call to action for government and industry officials that stronger policies and regulations are needed to maintain a safe food supply and prevent future outbreaks. United States beef is still banned by some countries following the first 'mad cow' case just eleven months ago. Rather than react in a case-by-case situation, the government must proactively put in place policies, such as a national animal tracing system, and systematic controls on animal feed to assure we are doing all we can to diminish foodborne illness outbreaks and maintain confidence in our food supply.”
