Washington, DC – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn. -3) announced that Connecticut’s community health centers will receive over $11.4 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Capital Improvement Program Grant, including more than $5.1 million for those in the 3rd District, to support critically needed investments in health center renovations, repairs and health information technology.

“Community Health Centers not only provide high-quality, cost-effective health care to millions of people across the country – they are an engine for local employment and economic growth in many underserved and low-income communities,” said DeLauro. “This funding will provide a critically needed boost to the local economy, while expanding access to health care for thousands of people in Connecticut who are increasingly turning to community health centers as their primary source of care.”

Funding through this grant program includes the following community health centers in the 3rd Congressional District:

Community health centers offer coordinated primary and preventive health care visits, lab services, dental and mental health services and case management in a “one stop shopping” environment. Every year, more than 200,000 patients from across the state receive their care from Connecticut’s community health centers. Nearly one-third of patients are women and one-third are children. In March, Connecticut’s health centers received nearly $3.8 million through the Recovery Act to help them expand services to an estimated 20,143 new patients. A Georgetown University study estimated that every dollar invested in Connecticut’s community health centers would yield $2 in economic activity.

The $5.1 million being awarded to community health centers in the 3rd District today will make a significant difference to health centers that are already seeing an influx of patients who have lost their health care coverage.
