Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), Chair of the appropriations subcommittee that oversees federal spending to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), sent a letter to HHS Secretary Alex Azar demanding details on the Department’s solicitation of bids for a $250 million advertising campaign, “to defeat despair and inspire hope” about the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the severe implications for the potential misuse of taxpayer dollars, DeLauro sent this letter to demand details on the political motivations behind this campaign, whether the president’s reelection campaign officials requested HHS issue this contract bid, and if the content of the media campaign will follow public health guidance.
