DeLauro Announces $6.5 Million Grant for Head Start in New Haven

Funding Will Enable Program to Continue In ItsBirthplace

WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) announcedtoday that New Haven Public Schools have received a $6,507,031 federal grant tocontinue Head Start and Early Head Start for the city's children. DeLauro isthe senior Democrat on the subcommittee responsible for funding the Departmentof Health and Human Services, which awarded today's grant.

"This award is great news not just for the children who willcontinue to attend Head Start and Early Head Start, but the entire city, whichbenefits when our kids have early educational opportunities," DeLaurosaid. "Study upon study has shown that Head Start and Early Head Start givechildren the tools they need to succeed in our education system. Thefoundation Head Start provides is essential."

"We are delighted to have been selected to receive the newHead Start grant. This funding will enable us to continue our long tradition ofproviding comprehensive Head Start services to children and families," saidSuperintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Mayo. "Quality early childhoodeducation is a top priority in New Haven and this grant will help us in ourefforts to close the achievement gap."
