DeLauro Statement on President Obama’s Speech Regarding Military Action against ISIL
WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement tonight on President Obama’s address to the nation regarding military action against ISIL:
“Tonight the President made the case to our nation for taking action to stop the threat posed by ISIL. The plan the President put forward rightly strikes at ISIL for their barbaric attacks against women, children and innocent civilians. And they murdered two American journalists. ISIL is a terrorist group, pure and simple. They have the potential to be a threat to the American homeland and they must be stopped.
“President Obama has rightly recognized that we need a broad coalition that includes Arab nations and leaders, including the newly formed Iraqi government. Ultimately, the Middle East’s problems cannot be solved by American military might. They must be solved by the people in Iraq and across the region.
“I am pleased the President said he will not allow American troops to be dragged into another ground war. Nearly 13 years after terrorists attacked our homeland, we cannot go back down that road. Congress needs to support the efforts outlined by the President tonight.”
