DeLauro Visits New Haven Job Corps, Highlights Trump’s Proposed Budget Cuts
WASHINGTON, DC (March 12, 2018) — Congresswomen Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today visited the New Haven Job Corps Center, which has helped thousands of young adults jumpstart their careers in a variety of fields since 1996. The Department of Labor (DOL) Job Corps program provides career technical and academic training to young people aged 16 to 24.

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro speaks with carpentry students at the New Haven Job Corps Center.
"The Job Corps program is at the heart of our federal government's role in leveling the playing field so that young people can get the technical skills they need to earn a good living. The biggest economic challenge of our time is that people are in jobs that do not pay them enough to live on. With the rising costs in healthcare, childcare, and housing, Job Corps puts young people on the path to financial security by linking them to good-paying careers. "
"The President's proposed $407 million cut to Job Corps is particularly egregious given our nation's economic reality. No investment is more critical than investment in our people. With the New Haven Job Corps Center currently educating far fewer students than they are able to, any additional cuts would hamper the program's potential even further. The New Haven Job Corps Center serves as a path to better jobs and better wages, and slashing this program forecloses that vital opportunity. More than that, the proposed cuts would ripple through to our local economy. Cutting Job Corps is the wrong choice for our country's youth, and I will continue to fight every day to prevent that from happening in Congress."
DeLauro serves as Ranking Member of the Appropriations Subcommittee responsible for funding the Department of Labor.
