West Haven Housing Authority Receives $99,886 Federal Grant to Address Veteran Homelessness

NEW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) applauded the West Haven Housing Authority today for receiving a $99,886 federal grant to alleviate veteran homelessness. That money means 12 vouchers will be available to get veterans off the streets or out of shelters and into a permanent home. The grant announced today has been made possible by the Department of Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program.

“The brave men and women who serve our nation overseas deserve our admiration, our grateful thanks, and, when needed, our assistance. When so many families are struggling to get by, this grant to the West Haven Housing Authority will help our homeless veterans find the shelter and support they deserve.”

The grant, called the HUD-VASH Tenant Based Voucher awards, enable homeless veterans and their families to access affordable housing of their choice. Participating veterans rent privately owned housing and generally contribute a maximum of 30 percent of their income toward rent. Each veteran receiving a voucher will also receive a variety of services provided by the Veterans Administration.

HUD estimates that on any given night in 2013, there were 341 homeless veterans in Connecticut.
