DeLauro Statement on the Supreme Court’s Decision on United States v. Texas

June 24, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC (June 24, 2016) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on United States v. Texas.

“The Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Texas is a devastating setback for millions of our friends and neighbors. These are individuals who are hoping to do the same thing that many of us already do and provide their families with economic stability and opportunity. Rather than expending resources on separating families with costly and traumatic deportation raids, we must figure out how to integrate the people already living and working among us.

“Congress is long overdue to act on immigration reform and the Supreme Court’s decision shows why we must act. The split decision also underscores the urgent need for the Senate to vote on Merrick Garland’s nomination. The United States has a rich tradition and history of extending a hand to others and being a kind and generous nation. We cannot turn our backs on the millions of immigrants who are striving to become part of our country, but may be deported under this decision. We can and we must do better.”

DeLauro recently signed onto an amicus brief supporting the U.S. Department of Justice filing a petition with the Supreme Court to take up the case and reverse the lower court’s ruling. Last year, DeLauro signed onto an amicus brief in support of the Obama Administration’s appeal of the Fifth Circuit Court’s ruling in Texas v. United States.
