U.S. Service Academy Nominations

Instructions

The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. For more information, please review the page of Frequently Asked Questions for those seeking a Military Academy Nomination.

Each year, Congresswoman DeLauro has the privilege of nominating qualified Third District students for appointments to attend a Service Academy. The United States Service Academies educate and train future officers for service in the United States Armed Forces and include the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and U.S. Coast Guard Academy. These service academies provide a rigorous four-year undergraduate education and graduate leaders of character into our nation’s military service branches. Upon graduation, they commission as 2nd Lieutenants or Ensigns and are obligated to a minimum of a five-year service commitment.

The academies consider evidence of character, scholarship, leadership, physical aptitude, medical fitness, as well as personal goals and motivation in performing each nominee’s “whole-person” evaluation. These are also the criteria Congresswoman DeLauro’s Academy Advisory Committee uses to evaluate and recommend nominations. Congresswoman DeLauro provides Competitive Nominations to the academies.

We encourage candidates from all backgrounds and experiences to apply if they are interested. The service academies strongly encourage urban, minority, and female applicants to apply as these groups are underrepresented as officers in the Armed Services, and our nation’s leadership should reflect the diversity of our people. For those that show leadership potential but may have academic difficulties, selection to a service academy preparatory school may be an option.

Please submit all application materials in one complete package to Congresswoman DeLauro’s District Office by Monday, October 20, 2025.
