Chair DeLauro Applauds President Biden’s Decision to Ban Russian Oil and Gas Imports

March 8, 2022

WASHINGTON, DC — House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement after President Biden announced a ban on all imports of Russian oil, gas, and energy:

"Over the weekend, I joined my colleagues in the House and the Senate from both sides of the aisle for a briefing from President Volodymyr Zelensky. In the briefing, President Zelensky called on us to assist in controlling Ukraine's air space and securing the defense, economic, and humanitarian assistance he needs to defend and protect the people of Ukraine. He asked that we ban Russian oil imports, a move which continues to have my strong support. I applaud the Biden Administration for moving to ban all imports of Russian oil, gas, and energy, a vital step to further cripple the Russian economy.

"Today, the House will consider bipartisan legislation, of which I am an original cosponsor, that that will go even further in our shared mission to cut Russia off from the global economy. It will ban the import of Russian oil and energy products into the United States, take steps to limit Russia's access to the World Trade Organization, and reauthorize existing legislation to impose further sanctions on Russia.

"I am proud to be in the final stages of negotiating a comprehensive funding package to address humanitarian needs and support security in Central and Eastern Europe. I look forward to introducing this critical package to support Ukraine and its people as they continue this battle for democracy and freedom."
