Chair DeLauro Provides Historic Increase in Title I Funding

March 10, 2022

$17.5 billion included in federal spending package, largest increase in more than a decade

WASHINGTON, DC — House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) issued the following statement on the increase in funding for Title I included in the federal spending package:

"Education can serve as a great equalizer that opens doors and opportunities to jobs, higher wages, and a better life. I believe our schools, our teachers, and our students have been struggling for far too long. In the richest country in the world, it is unconscionable that we still have teachers forced to take money out of their own pockets to buy paper, pencils, even food for their students. I believe that the government's role is to provide opportunities for people, to work for the common good. With that, we must use this moment to create the architecture of our nation's future, and that includes making robust investments in education.

"As chair of the subcommittee that determines funding for federal education programs, I am proud to have provided the largest increase in funding for Title I Grants to Local Educational Agencies in more than a decade. With $17.5 billion for the program, we are working to ensure economically disadvantaged children receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education and helping to close academic achievement gaps. This funding will help support our next generation and help us build stronger communities. I look forward to seeing this increase signed into law knowing the true difference this funding will make in the lives of our nation's children."
