Congresswoman DeLauro, May Capone Almon Celebrate Saving of Trolley Square Post Office

February 19, 2010

New Haven, CT— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) and East Haven Mayor April Capone Alman praised the United States Post Service's decision to withdraw their proposal to close the East Haven Trolley Square Post Office location, citing a strong community and employee reaction.

The Trolley Square facility had been slated for closure, along with 12 other branches across the state, due to the United States Postal Service's financial concerns. Just a year and a half ago, this location was also targeted for closure after mold was discovered in its ventilation system. The proposed alternate site was in an area that was inaccessible to senior citizens and disabled citizens, and was ultimately decided to be unfeasible. The closing of the location would have exacerbated this problem, and left the entire town of East Haven without a post office.

"I am very pleased that the Postal Service has recognized the importance of the Trolley Square Post Office to the East Haven community and decided to keep the facility open. It is a vital part of the downtown business district, and easily accessible by public transportation— which is essential for our seniors and disabled citizens," Congresswoman DeLauro said. "While I appreciate the Postal Service's difficult financial situation, closing the Trolley Square location simply would have not been acceptable, and I praise their decision to listen to our citizens and local elected officials in preserving the Trolley Square location."

"We are delighted that Trolley Square Post Office will remain open as it is our only United States Postal Facility in the Town of East Haven. I appreciate that the officials of the USPS took into account the concerns of our town residents, specifically the elderly and disabled folks, who would have faced a tremendous hardship had our Post Office closed. This effort was accomplished because we stood together as a community to make our voices heard," Mayor Capone Almon said. "I am especially grateful to those folks, including State Representative Michael Lawlor, who rode the CT Transit bus to Frontage Rd. to demonstrate the challenges that would be created by a closure of the Trolley Square location. My administration recognizes the difficulties the United States Postal Service faces in operating in this difficult economy and we stand ready to assist them now or in the future, to provide necessary services to East Haven residents."
