Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro Statement on Retirement of Congressman Jim Cooper

January 25, 2022

NEW HAVEN – Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement on the retirement of Congressman Jim Cooper (TN-05):

"Throughout his 32-year career in the House, Congressman Jim Cooper has been a steadfast advocate for the people of Tennessee, a pragmatic legislator, and a brilliant leader. As Chair of the Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, he fought and passed legislation to create greater transparency in government and for action to protect his constituents from the realities of climate change, particularly damaging floods.

"A dear friend and a trusted partner, I am proud to serve alongside Jim. Our friendship stretches far beyond the confines of the committees we serve on or the districts we represent. In a letter of support, he once said, ‘Who would have thought a New England liberal like Rosa would be such an effective subcommittee chair of Ag Appropriations?' I was effective in large part because of his sound advice and unrivaled support. It is difficult for me to imagine what my legislative journey would have looked like without Jim a phone call away. The House of Representatives will not be the same without him.

"I look forward to our work ahead this year and know that this is not the end of Jim's efforts to support the people of Nashville. I wish him and his family well as they embark on the next adventure."
