DeLauro and WWII Veteran Present Veterans’ History Project To Students at Amity Regional High School
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) and Roger W. Boyd, Sr., 2nd Lieutenant U.S. Army/Air Corps (retired) and a resident of Orange, presented the Veteran's History Project this morning to students at Amity Regional High School. Mr. Boyd is a WWII veteran who recently taped his personal narrative for submission in the Library of Congress, as part of the Veteran's History Project. The project, which gathers oral histories from veterans, was authorized by Congress in 2000.
"It is fitting that we celebrate the extraordinary lives and achievements of American heroes like Roger Boyd - who gave so much so that all of us could live free," said DeLauro. "I am so pleased to be a part of this vitally important project to chronicle the lives of America's veterans by recording their first hand accounts of the triumphs and tragedies of our struggle to defend our great democracy - be it on the beaches of Normandy or in the rugged mountains of Afghanistan. While the students of Amity Regional High School were able to hear directly from Roger his personal experiences and insights of World War II - thanks to this project these stories and thousands more will be preserved for future generations of young Americans."
The United States Congress created the Veterans History Project in 2000. It was signed into law by President Clinton on October 27, 2000. The Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center is being preserved by the Library of Congress. Veterans' stories are being recorded in several ways including audio and video recordings, as well as collections of written narratives, personal correspondence, and photographs. The project collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans from World War I to the present wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
