DeLauro Announces $1.4 Million Grant to Help Prevent Future Flooding Damage
Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) announced a grant today from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of nearly $1.4 million to the state of Connecticut, specifically designated for East Haven, to help prevent future flood damage. The funds, which will be used to acquire and demolish five flood-prone homes there, were made available through a Severe Repetitive Loss (SRL) Grant from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
The SRL program, which is authorized by the Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2004, serves to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk of flood damage in states and communities that are likely to be affected by future flooding. FEMA provides up to 90 percent of the federal cost for the program. Congresswoman DeLauro has been involved in getting these funds since 2008.
"These essential funds will help prevent further property loss in our communities and enable residents and employers to move forward in the wake of devastating floods. I have spent years trying to secure this funding, and I am very pleased to see our efforts come to fruition," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "This particular neighborhood of East Haven is prone to flooding, and removing these homes will make the area safer and protect our residents and their homes from future damages."
