DELAURO ANNOUNCES 2012 3rd DISTRICT WINNER OF CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION
New Haven, CT— Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) announced today that Jeremy Wolin from Woodbridge is the winner of the 31th annual Congressional Art Competition, "An Artistic Discovery," for the Third Congressional District of Connecticut.
Started in 1982, the Congressional Art Competition is a nation-wide high school arts competition held each spring to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winner from their Congressional district and their work is displayed in the United States Capitol for one year, beginning in June. Since its inception, over 650,000 high school students have participated in this competition.
Jeremy is a student at the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven, and his winning black and white photograph titled "Introspection" is a thought-provoking piece which causes the viewer to think about women in a larger context - - the downward gaze of the subject making one wonder what she is contemplating. Though shot in black and white, the quality of the work displays a richness of color that is not lost on the audience. It will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol until May of 2013.
The second place runner-up, Alessandra Hogan from Wilbur Cross High School, will have her untitled charcoal, gold leaf and ink piece displayed in Congresswoman DeLauro's Washington, D.C. office, and third place runner-up Allie Stack, from Woodbridge, will have her digital collage, "Jaw Bones Dancing in the Rocking Chair of History" displayed the Congresswoman's New Haven office.
"Each spring, as I view the Congressional Art Competition exhibit, I am impressed by the artistic gifts and creativity of our young people— and this year is no exception. Jeremy's exceptional photograph "Introspection" is a shining example of the 3rd Congressional district's talents, and the depth and dimension displayed in his work is extraordinary," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "I am in awe of all our contestants today, and proud of their contributions to this contest and our community. Art enriches our lives, and I look forward to continuing this contest and enjoying more of our young people's outstanding work."
