DeLauro Announces 2015 3rd District Congressional Art Competition Winner

May 2, 2015

NEW HAVEN, CT— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) announced today that Mark Séjourné from Guilford is the winner of the annual Congressional Art Competition. For the next year his pastel piece, “Small Town USA,” will represent the Third Congressional District of Connecticut in the United States Capitol. Mark is a student at Guilford High School.

“The Congressional Art Competition is an event I look forward to every year. I love seeing the winning pieces from all across the country in the Capitol building, and hanging some of the works in my offices. Our lives are richer and fuller when we take the time to appreciate art, reflect on it and, perhaps most of all, to make it. I hope all of our young artists will continue to develop and refine their talents and share their artistic vision with the broader community.”

Started in 1982, the Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide competition held each spring to recognize and encourage the artistic talent of our nation’s high school students. Since its inception, over 650,000 high school students have participated in this competition. This year saw 42 submissions from Connecticut’s Third District; all the pieces will be on display at Gateway Community College through May 7.

The second place runner-up, Rebecca Flores-Vitti from Hamden High School, will have her acrylic, “Orange Peels,” displayed in DeLauro’s Washington, D.C. office. Third place runner-up Veronica Sills, from North Haven High School, will have her colored pencil piece, “Reflection,” displayed in DeLauro’s New Haven office.

Three Honorable Mentions were also awarded, in no particular order:
• “Sea Turtle,” a white charcoal piece by Caitlin Messinger of New Haven’s Co-Op HS
• “Harmonic Wording,” a digital art piece by Jacquelyn Nelson of Amity Regional HS
• “Novas-Man of Color,” a digital print by Keysha Buckham of Middletown HS
