DELAURO ANNOUNCES $3.75 MILLION GRANT FOR LONG WHARF TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENTS

August 17, 2011
Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) announced a $3,750,000 Federal Highway Administration grant from the Department of Transportation for improvements to Interstate 95 and Long Wharf Drive in New Haven.

The grant is a critical part of the $2 billion New Haven Harbor Crossing Improvement Program, which will improve traffic conditions along Interstate 95 in the Greater New Haven area. By making improvements to the interstate, replacing the Q Bridge, and establishing a new Shore Line East commuter rail station at State Street in New Haven, this program will help to accommodate the northeast corridor's large traffic volume.

Part of the Interstate Maintenance Discretionary program, which works to resurface, restore, rehabilitate, and reconstruct America's Interstate System, this grant will be used to relocate and build new on- and off-ramps for I-95 at Long Wharf Drive. Additionally, these funds will be used to make improvements to medians and for the construction of auxiliary lanes along I-95.

"I am very pleased that New Haven has been awarded these funds, which will help to improve our local roads, alleviate the area's heavy traffic, support jobs, and foster economic growth throughout the region. Originally designed to handle just 40,000 vehicles a day, the New Haven Harbor Crossing area is currently used by over 140,000 cars a day— our roads and bridges were simply not designed for this kind of use. These funds will greatly benefit the Greater New Haven area by reducing traffic congestion, improving the safety of our roads, and helping to keep the flow of commerce moving throughout the northeast corridor."
