DeLauro Announces $950,000 to Replace Moses Wheeler Bridge

October 6, 2010

Deteriorating span connects Milford and Stratford, traveled by 135,000 cars and trucks each day

New Haven, CT— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) announced today the Department of Transportation has awarded $950,000 to New Haven and Fairfield to replace the aging Moses Wheeler Bridge.

Built in 1958, this bridge is one of the longest and most traveled bridges in Connecticut, spanning the Housatonic River and supporting the estimated 135,000 cars and trucks that travel I-95 each day. Weather and heavy use have taken a toll on the bridge, resulting in the need for replacement. When completed, the new span will be expanded and improved, with full-width shoulders allowing for easier traffic flow should there be an accident or police activity.

"I have fought for funding for this project as for years we have known that the Moses Wheeler Bridge is in dire need of replacement, and the U.S. Transportation Department's decision to provide these funds will enable the construction process to move forward more quickly. With an estimated 135,000 cars and trucks traveling over this deteriorating span each and every day, it is essential that this project be completed," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "This award is a step toward replacing the existing Moses Wheeler Bridge, a critical link in New England's transportation and economy, with a more efficient and safe structure."
