DeLauro Announces AmeriCorps Grant for Connecticut Teach for America

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3)announced today that Connecticut's Teach for America, headquartered in NewHaven, has received a $168,800 AmeriCorps grant from the Corporation forNational and Community Service (CNCS).

The grant will support 211 AmeriCorps members who will serveas new, full-time teachers for two years in low-income schools. The schools arelocated in Bridgeport, Stamford, Hartford, New Haven and Windham.

"Serving our communities is an essential part of thesolution to many of the challenges we face. These AmeriCorpsmembers will meet pressing local needs and strengthen our communities as theydevelop civic and leadership skills that can last a lifetime. Thepartnering of AmeriCorps members and Teach for America will bring more young,bright and motivated men and women into school systems that will benefit fromtheir talent and enthusiasm. I congratulate Teach for America for receivingthis grant and thank all those who have answered the call to service by joiningAmeriCorps."

In 2011, DeLauro was presented the Teach for AmericaCongressional Champion Award in recognition of her leadership in expandingeducational opportunities. She has also served as a guest teacher in a Teachfor America corps member's classroom in New Haven.

AmeriCorps is a national service program that engagesAmericans of all ages and backgrounds in service to meet critical needs. Its members serve through thousands of nonprofit and faith-based organizationsin rural and urban communities throughout the nation. Teach for America is thenational corps of recent college graduates who commit to teaching for two yearsin public schools around the country.
