DeLauro Announces Nearly $4M in Federal Coronavirus Relief Grants for Emergency Housing and Homelessness Assistance

September 11, 2020

NEW HAVEN, CT — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) Chair of the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, today announced $3,986,963 for Connecticut's Third Congressional District and $10,759,215 for Connecticut's non-entitlement areas in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG). DeLauro helped secure this critical emergency relief in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

This COVID-19 relief funding was awarded as follows:

Hamden Town: $360,802

Middletown: $328,072

Milford Town: $303,743

New Haven: $1,316,331

Stratford: $308,526

Waterbury: $967,560

West Haven: $401,929

CT Non-entitlement*: $10,759,215

"The coronavirus has left too many Connecticut families facing economic hardship and housing instability," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "This funding will provide targeted investments responsive to community needs like increasing access to broadband internet and the supply of affordable housing and expanding economic opportunities. These are vital federal funds invested right back into our neighborhoods and communities. I look forward to seeing the positive results of these investments and will continue to fight for additional federal funding for Connecticut."

CDBG are provided to states and local governments to facilitate the development of viable urban communities through suitable housing and living environments and economic opportunities for those with low or moderate incomes. The CARES Act provided a total of $5 billion for the CDBG program to enable states, counties, and cities, to rapidly respond to COVID-19 and the economic and housing impacts it caused. These funds can be used to help with rental assistance, legal support, and the acquisition of properties for permanent affordable housing. Additionally, they can be used to expand community health facilities, child care centers, food banks, and senior services.

*Non-entitlement areas are cities with populations of less than 50,000 (except cities that are designated principal cities of Metropolitan Statistical Areas) and counties with populations of less than 200,000.
