DELAURO APPLAUDS $2.9 MILLION FEMA PUBLIC ASSISTANCE GRANT FOR MILFORD

April 9, 2012

New Haven, CT — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) today applauded the recent decision by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to award a $2.9 million Public Assistance grant to the Town of Milford. The funds will be used to repair the stone revetment protecting the Trumbull Ave. public roadway, which was dislodged by the strong surge tides and wave energy accompanying Tropical Storm Irene. The federal share of assistance is 75% of the total cost of the Trumbull Ave. revetment.

"Like many communities in our district," said Congresswoman DeLauro, "Milford was hit hard by Tropical Storm Irene last August. I am glad to see that, with this $2.9 million public assistance grant, FEMA is providing funding to enable Milford to recover and rebuild the Trumbull Ave. revetment. I hope FEMA will soon provide similar grants to the other damaged communities in our district."

"We are happy to hear that our 75% reimbursement for this project has been authorized," said Mayor Ben Blake of Milford, "and look forward to working with our federal representatives toward its completion." On September 2, 2011, President Obama issued a Major Disaster Declaration for Connecticut due to the destruction created by Tropical Storm Irene. Public Assistance was approved for Fairfield County, Hartford County, Litchfield County, Middlesex County, New Haven County, New London County, Tolland County, and Windham County. The Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Public Assistance (PA) Grant Program is to provide assistance to State, Tribal and local governments, and certain types of Private Nonprofit organizations so that communities can quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President. Through the PA Program, FEMA provides supplemental Federal disaster grant assistance for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and the repair, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged, publicly owned facilities and the facilities of certain Private Non-Profit (PNP) organizations. The PA Program also encourages protection of these damaged facilities from future events by providing assistance for hazard mitigation measures during the recovery process.
