DeLauro Applauds Action on Unemployment Insurance

July 22, 2010

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) released the following statement praising the United States Senate for acting last night to restore Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits to millions of American families. The benefits expired earlier this year, and legislation to reinstate them has been delayed as Senate Republicans blocked action for more than two months. The House of Representatives passed the bill today, and it will now go to the President for his signature. "I am enormously pleased with the Senate's actions, as restoring these unemployment benefits is simply the right thing to do. Republicans in the Senate have blocked this critical legislation on multiple occasions, repeatedly denying relief to millions of unemployed Americans who were laid off through no fault of their own. Their actions have put too many families that were already struggling into more and more precarious financial situations. Congress has a responsibility to provide emergency relief to those who have not been able to find work, and by restoring these benefits, we are helping millions of Americans and their families to weather this difficult economy."
