DeLauro Applauds Connecticut Selection for Marine Highway Funding
Washington, DC –Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) issued the following statement today praising the selection of Connecticut by the U.S. Department of Transportation to compete in the America's Marine Highway Program.
This transportation initiative, designed to reduce traffic congestion along our nation's coastlines by supporting the use of waterways, is being made available to just eight states. Connecticut's application calls for a better freight service across Long Island Sound from New London to Orient Point, New York, and would help to alleviate the high volume of traffic on the surrounding roadways.
"The Marine Highway Program is an innovative solution to some of our most pressing transportation problems and will have benefits that extend beyond reducing traffic: it will provide an alternate and potentially faster route for freight, increase the quality of the air we breathe, and provide jobs for skilled workers in the marine industries," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "By creating a more effective transport method across Long Island Sound, Connecticut will be playing a critical role in moving freight more quickly up and down the Eastern Seaboard. I look forward to working with the Connecticut Department of Transportation on the state's final proposal to be submitted."
