WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) todayapplauded the news that Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven, Inc. hasbeen awarded a Capital Grant of $100,000 from NeighborWorks® America. The grantwill be used to make low-cost loans available to homeowners in the Newhallvilleneighborhood of New Haven who want to reinvest in their homes.
"This grant will help further Neighborhood Housing Services'mission of helping New Haven's neighborhoods succeed, supporting families inour community and strengthening our local economy," said DeLauro. "NHS has played a positive role in our communities for over three decades, revitalizing neighborhoods and changing lives. Kudos to NHS for winning thisgrant and I look forward to seeing the results in Newhallville."
Jim Paley, Executive Director of Neighborhood HousingServices of New Haven, said: "Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven isdelighted to receive funding from NeighborWorks® America to support our effortsto generate increased private reinvestment in Newhallville. In the pastfew years, our organization has acquired 25 dilapidated vacant houses in thisneighborhood that we will rehabilitate for low- and moderate-income, first-timehomebuyers. Because the houses we own are in carefully defined clusters, weexpect that the impact of our work will motivate existing owners to reinvest intheir properties, thereby contributing to our overall neighborhoodrevitalization goals."
The funding for this grant was provided by legislationpassed by Congress and signed into law earlier last month. It supportsNeighborWorks organizations nationwide in their efforts to revitalize andstrengthen their communities, promote and preserve affordable housing for theresidents of their service areas, and create or sustain jobs through localNeighborWorks-supported projects and activities.
