DeLauro Applauds Local Teacher for Winning 2010 Milken Educator Award
Washington, DC- Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) announced today that Shelly Thompson, a teacher from the Totoket Valley Elementary School in Northford, has been named as a recipient of the 2010 Milken Educator Award.
One of the nation's top awards for teachers, the Milken Educator Awards honor early-career educators who of exceptional talent, have demonstrated educational accomplishments outside the classroom, show long-range potential for leadership, and are actively engaged in their communities. Thompson joins the over 2,500 K-12 teachers, principals, and education specialists who have been named as recipients of this prestigious honor, and will receive a $25,000 award.
"Nothing we do in Congress is more important as ensuring that the next generation of Americans has the tools and the opportunities to realize their dreams. Education is the cornerstone of our republic, and it is our responsibility to ensure all our citizens receive a quality education," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "That is why I am so proud of Shelly for achieving this distinction. Her work with the students of Totoket and around the world is inspiring to me, and this award recognizes what a talented teacher she is."
