DeLauro Applauds New Department of Education Rules Cracking Down on For-Profit Colleges

June 13, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC (June 13, 2016) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding new rules proposed by the U.S. Department of Education that would make it easier for students to sue for-profit colleges that misrepresent job placement and graduation rates. Under the proposed rules, students will more easily be able to have their loans forgiven and will no longer be required to sign mandatory arbitration agreements.

“The Department of Education’s new proposed rules are a win for the millions of American students who have enrolled in for-profit schools. When students receive information from a school regarding its graduation and job placement rates, they expect that information to be accurate. Unfortunately, many of these institutions misrepresent the facts, touting false numbers to further entice students to enroll. These actions are nothing more than a money grab, often leaving students with insurmountable debt, while the institutions make off with billions in federal aid. Whether it is Corinthian Colleges or Trump University, American students deserve better than the lies some executives are telling. Today’s actions will help put an end to predatory practices and I urge the Department of Education to finalize it as soon as possible.”

DeLauro is the senior Democrat on the subcommittee responsible for funding the Department of Education.
