DeLauro Calls on DeVos to Reverse Course on Gainful Employment Rule

August 17, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC (August 17, 2017) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding Secretary DeVos' actions to weaken the gainful employment rule, which protects students from predatory higher education programs.

"I am deeply concerned by Secretary DeVos' most recent action to gut the gainful employment rule, which is on the books to protect students and veterans from unscrupulous schools that use predatory practices to get rich off of taxpayer dollars," said DeLauro. "While the Department of Education has made its intention clear to rewrite the regulation, which was the product of input from various stakeholders and experts, the Department must enforce the current regulation as it stands until then.

"As public servants tasked with looking out for Americans' best interest, the proper course of action is always to listen to Americans' voices before making changes hastily and in ways that will harm them. I urge Secretary DeVos to reverse course and put the interests of students, veterans and taxpayers above companies abusing the federal student aid system."
