DeLauro Calls for Tougher Consumer Safety Proections

January 20, 2010
Responds to recall of approximately 635,000 Dorel Asia cribs due to safety hazard

Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) released the following statement today in response to the recall of approximately 635,000 cribs produced by the Dorel Asia company. The recall was prompted by a suffocation and strangulation hazard when a piece of hardware fails. One death has already been reported, and 10 more infants have been injured by these cribs.

Congresswoman DeLauro said, "I am appalled that it takes a child's death to prompt the recall of a supposedly safe item. We must improve and toughen the current consumer safety protections, and work to make sure they are implemented better. Any product sold to the public should be safe, but we must take extra care with items specifically made for our children—parents should be able to put their children in a crib and not have to fear for their lives."
