American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds to improve New Haven, CT to Springfield, MA route

Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) announced today the award of $40 million in funding for the High Speed Intercity Passenger Rail (HSIPR) Program, which will affect the New Haven- Springfield Amtrak Northeast Regional service.

The funds, provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will be used to improve service, increase reliability, and reduce trip times for train service between New Haven, Connecticut and Springfield, Massachusetts. This project is part of a larger initiative, announced by President Obama today, of $8 billion to 31 states across the country to improve existing railways and help develop a nationwide high-speed intercity passenger rail service.

Congresswoman DeLauro said, "I couldn't be more pleased with the President's announcement today. As he said, this initiative will be building the "infrastructure of the future." These funds have been a long time coming, and I look forward to their arrival and execution. These kinds of projects demonstrate the best realization of ARRA funds: we improve our infrastructure, create jobs, increase our connectivity and productivity, and literally strengthen our nation's foundations."
