DeLauro Celebrates 42nd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade Decision

January 22, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC--Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today marking the 42nd anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. She also announced her opposition to legislation before the House of Representatives that would place unprecedented restrictions on how women with private insurance can spend private dollars when purchasing health insurance. DeLauro voted against the bill last year as well.

“Forty-two years ago today history was made when the Supreme Court ensured that abortion would remain a safe and legal procedure for women to consider, if and when they need it. Unfortunately, Republicans are still insisting on interfering with what should be a decision between a woman, her clergy, her family and her doctor. Today they are rushing to the floor legislation that effectively attempts to ban working women’s access to abortion, a legal medical procedure.

“This bill places politics before a woman’s health and individual circumstances. Women need to be able to consult with their families and doctors, and not have their health care decisions made for them by politicians. Republicans say this bill would end taxpayer funding for abortion. Federal insurance coverage of abortion is already restricted, and this bill goes far beyond that. This is the same-old, same-old from the House Republican Majority. The American people deserve better.

“Congress should be addressing the most pressing economic issue facing American families: that too many jobs simply do not pay enough to live on. We should be focused on creating good, high-paying jobs, ensuring steady and rising wages, and rebuilding our roads, bridges and railways. But instead of voting on bigger paychecks and better infrastructure we are voting on an attack on women’s health. It is nothing short of shameful.”
