April 1, 2015

Connecticut Wage Gap is $.78 On the Dollar

NEW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) released the following statement today commending increased focus on the gender-based wage gap. Senator Chris Murphy is holding an event this afternoon highlighting a new report showing that male nurses make $5,100 more on average annually than their female colleagues.

“The gender-based wage gap exists in nearly every profession and is present even after controlling for a host of factors, including education. That is why I continue to fight for the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would require employers to show pay disparity is truly related to job performance. I appreciate Senator Murphy’s attention to this issue and look forward to having his support as we continue to fight for policies that help working Americans.”

Connecticut’s seventy-eight cent wage gap mirrors that of the nation as a whole, amounting to $10,876 annually for full-time working men and women. This is equivalent to approximately 86 more weeks of food, or seven months of mortgage and utilities payments. The wage gap costs women who are employed full-time in the United States more than $490 billion annually.
