DeLauro Demands Congress Vote on Measures to End Gun Violence

June 22, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC (June 22, 2016) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today spoke on the House floor to call on Congress to bring commonsense gun violence prevention bills to the House floor for a vote. Republicans continue to block votes on measures including universal background checks, the terror loophole, and a ban on assault weapons.

During her remarks on the House floor, DeLauro read the names of the victims killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012 and then called on Congress to enact commonsense gun violence prevention bills. Following other speeches by Members, DeLauro joined dozens of House Democrats in holding a sit-in, which is continuing now on the House floor.

"It can be anyone's child, anyone's grandchild that will lose their life. One child every other day is killed by gun violence in the United States of America. They leave families, they leave siblings who are unable to even cope with the sense of loss," said Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro. "Why are we here today? We are here today to say universal background checks; No Fly, No Buy. It's as simple as that. And for me personally, as my colleague from Rhode Island said, we should ban assault weapons. We should ban them—that's what occurred at Sandy Hook, and several other these tragedies."

"The American people sent us here to vote—that's what you have done, demand that this Congress vote on this issue. Debate it and vote. And people can be free to vote whatever way they choose to, but our Constitution says we vote on these issues," continued DeLauro. "Those children all over America should not be forgotten, they should be remembered, and this body should be allowed to vote on their behalf."
