DELAURO ON DEPT. OF LABOR ANNOUNCEMENT

September 19, 2011

New Haven, CT — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) issued the following statement today in response to the Department of Labor's announcement that Secretary Hilda Solis, Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Douglas H. Shulman and several state labor commissioners will take steps to address the improper classification of employees as independent contractors or other non-employees, also known as ‘wage theft.' Connecticut is one of six states participating in this new effort.

"I commend the Department of Labor for their action on the critical issue of protecting workers' rights. The memorandums of understanding signed today will help to prevent the improper classification of employees as independent contractors or other non-employees, which can cost workers valuable time and pay," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "I am proud that Connecticut will help to lead this worthy effort, and look forward to the many benefits this change will bring, both to our workers and our economy as a whole."
