DeLauro Highlights Resources Available To Domestic Violence Victims
Tomorrow Marks 20th Anniversary of Violence Against Women Act
NEW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3)--joined by Ansonia Police Chief Kevin Hale, and BHcare President and CEO Roberta Cook—today highlighted the resources available to domestic violence victims in Connecticut. Tomorrow marks the 20th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act.
“This past week, America was shocked by the disturbing video of former Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice punching his wife and knocking her out in an elevator. This type of horrible crime is all-too-common. These crimes fester in the dark. We need to bring them out into the open--not just when a public figure is involved, but every day--and help women come forward. That is how we will make a difference and how we started beating back this scourge years ago.”
Last week the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its 2014 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey. It reported that 31 percent of women have been physically abused by an intimate partner at some point in their life. Nearly 19 percent of women have been raped. And every day over three women die at the hands of a current or former intimate partner.
Since the Violence Against Women Act became law domestic violence has dropped by two-thirds. DeLauro voted for legislation reauthorizing the landmark law last year, which expanded services and improved protections for victims of domestic violence.
