DeLauro, Himes Applaud HUD Grant for Grant Street Senior Apartments

Will Help theElderly, Disabled Continue to Live Independently At Home

WASHINGTON,DC – Connecticut Representatives Rosa DeLauro and Jim Himes today applauded theU.S. Housing and Urban Development's announcement that the Grant Street SeniorApartments will receive a $151,919 grant to help senior citizens and personswith disabilities receive health care, meals, and other critical supportiveservices. The grants are awarded through HUD's Multifamily Housing Service Coordinator Program(MHSC).

"Thisgrant is great news for the seniors and persons with disabilities who will bebetter able to access the services they need to live independently," said DeLauro. "Our government has an obligation to help the most vulnerable among us livewith dignity and this grant will further that goal."

"Thisfunding means more affordable housing and specialized services for our area'ssenior citizens," said Himes. "It is important that all seniors be ableto age with dignity and live in comfort, and I look forward to working withGrant Street Senior Apartments to ensure our seniors can live independently aslong as possible."

Thegrants are awarded to eligible owners of private housing developments thatreceive rental subsidies from HUD to house low-income individuals. Theseproperty owners or their management companies either hire or contract servicecoordinators with backgrounds in providing social services, especially to thefrail elderly and people with disabilities, to assist their residents withspecial needs.

Thegrant awarded today is designed for an initial three-year period to alloweligible owners of multifamily housing for the elderly or disabled, to hire andsupport a service coordinator. The funds cover such costs as salary, benefits,quality assurance, training, office space, equipment, and other relatedadministrative expenses.
