DeLauro Honors 50th Anniversary of LBJ’s Economic Opportunity Act
Milestone in the War on Poverty Signed Today In 1964
WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today, the 50th anniversary of President Johnson signing the Economic Opportunity Act:
“Fifty years ago President Johnson and Congress worked together on the goal of ending poverty in the United States. That opportunity and obligation to do everything we can to end poverty in America remains with us in 2014. Unfortunately we are failing in our efforts.
“In the past we always worked to ensure a rising tide lifts all boats and that all Americans who fall upon hard times have had an opportunity to get back on their feet. But the current Republican Majority has no interest in supporting vital safety net programs like SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, which helps feed hungry Americans.
“Unemployment insurance is another prime example. As far back as the Eisenhower Administration, Democrats and Republicans have worked together to extend this program when unemployment was high. But the Republican Majority had no interest this time and last December benefits ran out for people who lost their job through no fault of their own. Even as the stock market is at record levels we are telling people they are on their own.
“This is wrong. This is not what America is about. Our top priority should be creating jobs and helping workers get back on their feet. Education, access to health care and creating jobs is the mission Lyndon Johnson committed us to 50 years ago. It is time for this Congress to step up and do the right thing.”
