DeLauro Honors World War II Veteran

July 3, 2012

NEW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) today honored World War II veteran and New Haven resident Roman Chester Gensicki with the medals he never received for his wartime service. Gensicki was stationed in the Pacific as an Army surgical technician from January 1943 to March 1946.

“Because of Roman’s hard work, heroism and courage in adversity, more Americans got to come home from the war,” DeLauro said. “He gave so much of himself for our nation’s freedom and helped protect invaluable treasures: the freedom and opportunity that are the cornerstones of our society. War’s legacy extends far beyond the years during which the conflict took place. It is an experience that lasts a lifetime and touches countless generations, as I know it has touched Roman. These medals are just one way we thank him, and all the other great World War II veterans, for standing up when their country needed them and helping to rid the world of a terrible tyranny.”

Gensicki received the:

  • Good Conduct Medal
  • American Campaign Medal
  • Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (with 1 bronze service star)
  • World War II Victory Medal
  • Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII
  • Marksman Badge (with rifle bar)

Over the years DeLauro has helped many veterans like Gensicki claim the medals and the recognition they earned defending America. Her office is ready to assist other veterans and their families get the delayed medals they are due.
