DeLauro on the Impact of Women in the American Economy

March 8, 2010

Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) released the following statement in response to the report issued today by the Center for American Progress, Our Working Nation: How Working Women are Reshaping America's Families and Economy and What it Means for Policymakers:

"Today's report shows just how dramatically the American family has changed over the years, with women making up half the workforce, and two- thirds of women assuming the role of breadwinner, or co-breadwinner. It is clear that society has evolved and we can no longer assume that men in the workplace have a wife at home, tending to their household needs but are instead at work as well, and we must ensure that women are provided equal pay for equal work. We must respond as a nation in kind, providing help to our working families who can't afford to take a day off to care for themselves or their children should they fall ill with our paid sick days legislation. We must strengthen our labor laws, and increase our workplace flexibility to ensure that America will remain as a competitor in the global economy."
