DeLauro Joins Barnard Environmental Studies School Students to Celebrate Earth Day

April 21, 2015

NEW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) joined second graders at New Haven’s Barnard Environmental Studies School this morning to celebrate Earth Day. They worked on “waking up” one of the school’s courtyard gardens for spring planting, which involves weeding and cleaning the garden before planting vegetables, fruits, spices and flowers.

“Earth Day is an important time for all of us to renew our commitment to the environment and the need to be good stewards of it. Seeing the joy students had while working in their garden was an inspiring reminder of the importance of our connection to the earth. Earth Day serves as a reminder of how important conservation efforts are so that today’s children, their children, and their children’s children, can enjoy a cleaner and greener planet.”

Barnard Environmental Studies School has students from pre-K through eighth grade. The environmental theme is integrated into all subject areas, which are organized around four themes: fresh water, energy, migration and the Long Island Sound. Barnard’s environmental focus promotes respect and concern for humans and nature, and encourages students to become active stewards of both.
