DeLauro, Larson Announce $50,813 in New Federal Funding For Connecticut Senior Volunteers

February 27, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC—Connecticut Representatives Rosa DeLauro and John Larson announced today that Community Renewal Team, Inc. (CRT) has received a $50,813 grant to support senior volunteer activities from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

“These grants are critical to ensuring that the Community Renewal Team is able to support senior volunteers in communities across our state,” DeLauro said. “Senior volunteers bring a lifetime of skills and experience to their service and with these funds, volunteers will be able to transport seniors to doctors’ offices, educate children about the benefits of healthy eating and exercise, and volunteer at food pantries to help end food insecurity. Our state and our nation are stronger because of their contributions to society and we must continue to invest in programs that encourage volunteerism in our communities.”

“This funding will allow the Community Renewal Team to participate in one of the largest networks of senior volunteers in the nation,” Larson said. “Connecticut is home to a proud and distinguished senior population that has acquired a treasure chest worth of knowledge and expertise. I applaud this agency for securing the grant and know we all benefit as citizens, young and old, from this worthy program administered by CNCS.”

DeLauro is the senior Democrat on the Labor-Health and Human Services-Education Appropriations Subcommittee, which is responsible for funding CNCS. CRT is headquartered in Hartford, part of Larson’s district, and serves communities throughout Central Connecticut.

The grant was awarded as part of the RSVP program, one of the largest volunteer networks in the nation for people 55 and older. Among the activities performed by volunteers are:
• Organizing neighborhood watch programs
• Tutoring and mentoring disadvantaged or disabled youth
• Renovating homes
• Teaching English to immigrants
• Assisting victims of natural disasters
