DeLauro Meets With Third District Mayors, First Selectmen, Town Managers
EW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) held her annual meeting today with mayors, first selectmen and town managers from across the Third Congressional District. They discussed a variety of challenges facing their cities and towns, particularly the economy, the impact of the federal budget on Connecticut’s towns and cities, and the opportunity for cities and towns to apply for federal funding.
“This meeting is always a great opportunity for me to hear from Connecticut’s leaders about their work and their communities’ needs. And it allows me to fill them in on what is going on in Washington and how it may impact Connecticut’s towns. Most importantly, it is a chance for me to express my gratitude for their dedication and passion on behalf of their constituents. Their work is essential to keeping Connecticut prosperous and safe.
“Grants are crucial to augmenting the budgets of our towns and cities, particularly in the last few years as budgets have been tightened across the state. Last year I wrote or led 46 letters of support for various grants Third District cities and towns applied for. In everything from disaster relief, to education, to job training, these funds do a world of good for Connecticut residents.
“These grants are necessary even as the economy continues to improve. Wall Street may be doing better, but Main Street is still hurting. The single biggest economic challenge facing Connecticut families today is that too many jobs do not pay enough to make ends meet. I am proud Connecticut has been leading the way in passing policies that help working families. We were among the first states to pass a $10.10 minimum wage, which I have been fighting for nationwide. The same goes for several other programs, most notably ensuring people have the opportunity to earn paid sick days.
“Most importantly, I made sure our local leaders know that I am fighting for their communities and they always have an open ear in my office. I am here to help them. I want to thank them for having a very productive meeting with me today and all that they do, day in and day out for Connecticut’s families.”
