DeLauro Pleased with FEMA Hurricane Sandy Claims Review Extension
WASHINGTON, DC--Congresswoman DeLauro (CT-3) released the following statement on this morning’s announcement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that they will be extending the Claims Review deadline for Hurricane Sandy until October 15th. FEMA’s announcement comes on the heels of an announcement made earlier in the day by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that it will not require repayment of potential ‘duplicate’ benefits from most homeowners who received increased flood insurance claim payments tied to Superstorm Sandy.
“Today’s announcements by HUD and FEMA provide important relief to many of the homeowners who have been coping with the process of rebuilding in the aftermath Superstorm Sandy. I hope that with HUD’s decision to provide relief to some of those who are concerned about potential duplicative benefits and FEMA’s deadline extension, policyholders who may have been initially reluctant to enter the process will be encouraged to do so.
“This has and continues to be a long, frustrating process for many in our shoreline communities. While I am encouraged by this news, I urge FEMA to review these requests as expeditiously as possible.”
Important facts for impacted residents to know:
1) FEMA has extended their deadline for review requests to October 15, 2015.
2) It will not require repayment of potential ‘duplicate’ benefits for HUD from most homeowners who received increased flood insurance claim payments tied to Sandy.
3) HUD determined that additional insurance proceeds up to $20,000 will not be treated as duplicative under their programs.
4) Policyholders who have already requested a review of their claim do not have to call again. They are in the system and an adjuster will continue to work with them after the new October 15 deadline.
