DeLauro Praises Biden Administration for Reversing Trump Restrictions on Fetal Tissue Research
WASHINGTON – House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) issued the following statement after President Biden announced it will reverse the former administration’s fetal tissue ban:
“Today, the Biden administration took an important step to reverse some of the last administration’s efforts to block lifesaving research that requires the use of fetal tissue. Research through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will be governed once again by fact and science rather than ideology.
“Research using fetal tissue is not an abortion issue, nor does it increase the number of abortions. Research using fetal tissue has a long history of bipartisan support and should be lauded for its role in developing life-saving treatments. Vaccines for polio, rubella, measles, chickenpox, and rabies would not have been discovered without the use of fetal tissue in research, nor would many common treatments, including those for rheumatoid arthritis, hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, and countless other diseases.
“We need this research—it is essential to the development of vaccines and treatments, and it saves lives. I thank Secretary Becerra and the Biden administration for taking this important step and reversing these senseless restrictions.”
