DeLauro Presents Overdue Korean War Medals to Local Veteran
New Haven, CT – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) recognized Celestino Cordova for his service to the nation during the Korean War, presenting him with four medals and two badges, all long overdue: the Korean Service Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Korean Service Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Sharp Shooter Badge and Rifle Bar. Celestino served two tours of duty in Korea and seven years and nine months on active duty.
Originally from Puerto Rico, Celestino has also been an active member of the New Haven community, founding the Spanish Cultural Association, serving as the first elected City-wide Selectman of New Haven, and is a member of the Knights of Columbus, JUNTA for Progressive Action, the Democratic Hispanic Caucus, the Peace Commission, the Urban Renewal Initiative, LULAC Headstart, and the Democratic Town Committee.
"I am very proud to honor and celebrate today a hero among us, Celestino Cordova, for his service and sacrifice during the Korean War, and his dedication to improving our local community. Our nation is forever in debt to Celestino and other military veterans like him, who fought for the freedoms we too often take for granted. Working with veterans to ensure they receive the medals they have earned is one of the most rewarding tasks my staff and I take on," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "Many of these brave men and women are not even aware of the honors they deserve, viewing their service as simply part of their patriotic duty. Their selfless courage and sacrifice have defined our nation, and represent the best of our uniquely American values."
Congresswoman DeLauro has helped hundreds of veterans receive the medals they deserve. Her office is ready to assist others like Celestino, and can be reached at (203) 562-3718 or delauro.house.gov.
