DeLauro Presents Raymond Ciarlelli Overdue WWII Medals
New Haven, CT – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) recognized Raymond Ciarlelli for his service to the nation during World War II, presenting him with five long-overdue medals, including the Army of Occupation medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal, WWII medal, Rifleman Medal, and the State of Connecticut Service Medal. Additionally, DeLauro presented Ciarlelli with a special Congressional military certificate.
"I could not be more proud today to honor and celebrate one of our own, Raymond Ciarlelli. He has earned every one of these medals: Army of Occupation, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, WWII, Rifleman Medal, and the State of Connecticut Service Medal. I am also proud to have presented him with the special Congressional military certificate. As a nation and a community we are grateful beyond words for Raymond's service and sacrifice," said DeLauro.
Corporal Ciarlelli, who was born in and grew up in New Haven, spent two years in Japan during WWII, where he was assigned to an officer as a truck driver. As with many WWII veterans, who viewed military service as part of their patriotic duty, Raymond never realized he was entitled or eligible to receive any medals.
"Working with veterans to secure the medals they earned in service is one of the most powerful and rewarding tasks my staff and I take on. It is a reminder of the proud legacy of men and women in uniform who have defended our nation's most enduring values – of their selfless courage and great sacrifice," DeLauro continued. "Raymond has given these values life and purpose in war and in peace. In many ways his is the story of ‘our greatest generation.' Our entire nation has shared in your challenges and triumphs."
Over the years DeLauro has helped hundreds of veterans like Raymond to get the medals and the recognition they deserve. Her office is ready to assist other veterans and their families get the delayed medals they are due and can be reached at 203-562-3718 or https://delauro.house.gov.
