DeLauro Reaction to Stroller and Infant Travel Systems

January 20, 2010

Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) released the following statement today in reaction to the recall of approximately 1.5 million strollers and travel systems, which can include a car seat and infant carrier, manufactured by Graco Children's Products, Inc.

The products are being recalled due to a potential for fingertip amputation and laceration to children if their fingers become trapped in the canopy hinge mechanisms. Thus far, seven injuries have been reported, including five fingertip amputations. Consumers are being instructed to immediately stop using these products.

Congresswoman DeLauro said, "This is yet another striking example of the need for stronger consumer safety standards, and for these laws to be better enforced. The staggering amount of recalls, especially for products made for children, shows just how imperative this is. In just the last two days, over two million products such as these have been recalled due to a potential for amputation, lacerations, strangulation, or even death. It is long past time to re-evaluate our consumer safety procedures and make the needed improvements."
